Precepts

  • Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This is a precious and powerful practice that purifies negative karma and produces positive karma, or good fortune for our future. It functions to improve our familiarity with the practice of moral discipline, deepen our compassion and make our human life meaningful.

This practise is traditionally done at daybreak on the 15th of every month. It takes the form of a short Sadhana of prayers and meditations, which, in general is guided. This takes place at 7.00am at the temple – please check to make sure it’s on at: education@meditateinscotland.org

When we take the eight Mahayana precepts, we explicitly promise to abstain for twenty-four hours from eight actions:

  • Killing

  • Stealing

  • Sexual activity

  • Lying

  • Taking intoxicants

  • Eating after lunch

  • Sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats

  • Wearing ornaments, perfume, etc, and singing and dancing, etc.

These eight, however, are merely symbolic, for in reality we promise to abstain from all non-virtuous actions for twenty-four hours.

Taking and keeping these precepts is a special purification practice. Buddha realised that all living beings’ suffering comes from their previous negative karma, and so he taught special practices to purify it.

Anyone is welcome to attend this early morning session and participate in this very meaningful day.  It is recommended to treat this day like a special spiritual day of retreat where, even if we have many things to do, we mentally focus on making every activity meaningful and refrain from meaningless, ordinary activities that often clutter our day and mind.

Foundation Program

Mondays | 6:30 – 8:30pm

What is the Foundation Program?

The Foundation Program is an in-depth course designed to provide the ideal, structured conditions that result in deeper understanding and meditative experience of Buddha’s teachings on attaining happiness and enlightenment.

The classes are a dynamic mix of study, reflection, discussion, and meditation, and emphasizes the practical application of Buddhist wisdom to daily life to make authentic spiritual progress.

Current Book for Foundation Program

We are studying Joyful Path of Good Fortune: The Path to the Supreme Happiness of Enlightenment.

We all have the potential for self-transformation, and a limitless capacity for the growth of good qualities, but to fulfil this potential we need to know what to do at every stage of our spiritual journey.

With this book, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche offers us step-by-step guidance on the meditation practices that will lead us to lasting inner peace and happiness. With extraordinary clarity, he presents Buddha’s teachings in the order in which they are to be practiced, enriching his explanation with stories and analogies. A perfect guidebook to the Buddhist Path.

What we need is not displays of miracle powers but a clear example of how to enter an unmistaken spiritual path, how to practice that path comfortably and smoothly, and how to complete it successfully. This is the actual method for solving our daily problems.

Powa - Transference of Consciousness Prayer

  • Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Through practicing transference of consciousness, known as ‘powa’ with faith, compassion and concentration we can transfer the consciousness of those recently deceased to a higher rebirth or to the Pure Land of a Buddha. The ceremony can be done either by a group of practitioners or individually on behalf of one or more deceased persons, or countless deceased beings.

By engaging in this practice we also create a great collection of virtue, which will also lead us into the pathway to a Buddha’s Pure Land. Please let us know if a loved one has died and we can do this practice for them.

Wishfulfilling Jewel with Tsog

  • Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

What is Wishfulfilling Jewel? An inspiring prayer practice to develop our wisdom, compassion and spiritual protection for the benefit of all living beings.

Wishfulfilling Jewel is the heart essence of Kadampa Buddhism. In the first part we visualize our Spiritual Guide as Je Tsongkhapa and make prayers and requests to purify negativity, accumulate merit, and receive blessings. This prepares our mind for a twenty-minute meditation on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. After the meditation we make prayers to our Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden. Through this we can overcome obstacles to our practice and create favorable conditions so that we can nurture and increase our pure Dharma realizations.

This practice includes a special tsog (or food) offering. Traditionally, those who wish, bring a vegetarian food offering.

An empowerment is a blessing ritual and guided meditation through which we make a deep connection with a Buddha and create the cause to actualize that Buddha's enlightened state.

The empowerment of Buddha Vajrasattva will enable us to commune directly with Vajrasattva's mind and to receive purification through his blessings. This powerful experience gives us a taste of the inner freedom and radiant universal love experienced by an enlightened mind. Such a taste, even though it initially may be brief, is invaluable. It allows us to see what is possible and naturally empowers us to want to use our life fully in the service of actualizing our potential.

During the commentary, Gen Chokyi will explain the purification practice of Vajrasattva. This skillful and creative practice allows us to connect with the natural potential in our mind, to heal the wounds of the past, and to free ourselves from old and painful habits of thinking and acting. Through purifying our mind gradually we experience a wonderful lightness and inner freedom.  We are free to live a life based on wisdom and love, to experience a truly joyful heart and to become the person we really wish to be.

"Buddha taught many different methods to purify non-virtuous actions, downfalls and broken commitments, but the supreme method is the practice of meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. This practice is a scientific method to purify our mind and transform it from an impure mind into a pure mind using Tantric technology." - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The Oral Instructions of Mahamudra

A special Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa combined with the condensed sadhana of his Dharma Protector and a short 20-minute mediation. This puja includes two practices revealed by the Wisdom Buddha Manjushri. The first is a special Guru yoga in which we visualize our Spiritual Guide as Je Tsongkhapa, who himself is a manifestation of Manjushri.

By relying upon this practice, we can purify negativity, accumulate merit, and receive blessings. In this way, we will naturally accomplish all the realizations of the stages of the path of Sutra and Tantra, and in particular we will attain a very special Dharma wisdom.

Wishfulfilling Jewel with Tsog
